They say it is hard to be a prophet in your own land but if that is the case then people forgot to tell that to Grafton based trainer Greg Kilner.
Kilner has had to deal with the added stress of his daughter Leah’s recovery from an horrific race fall at Grafton last July in addition to conducting his training business whilst down on troops.
Nevertheless Kilner continues to churn out winners at a good rate for a small stable. Multiple successes with Swanston and a win with Volfoni early in the season started the training year off well no doubt.
However there is nothing sweeter than a return home to show the locals just how it is done and that is exactly what Kilner did with Kennysing on Glen Innes Cup day.
Kennysing has always had the makings of a nice horse and he put it all together on Cup day to score a very easy three length win in the Class 2 1400m.
To add even further spice to the victory Kennysing was ridden by another former Glen Innes product in Ben Looker so it was very much a day for the old boys.
There is little doubt after the win Greg would have have been on cloud nine and why not there is no doubt he would have tipped the gelding strongly to the many Glen Iness followers he still has.
That joy would have only been matched by the fact that the win by Kennysing saw Greg beat his old stablemate Paddy Cunningham into second place.
For those too young to remember both Greg and Paddy were apprenticed to Greg’s uncle Hunter Kilner in Glen Innes in the 1970’s when that stable was right near the top of the training tree in country NSW.
There was rumour going around Grafton that following the win Greg was seen to be wearing a huge smile, but you know racing it thrives on rumours.
