As we prepare for todays races at Grafton we should review just how the locals performed at last weeks meeting. To be honest it was a successful day for both the smaller and larger stables in town
First to the winners enclosure was Lisa Sheppard when West Germany scored his first win for the yard in the BM 58 1181m.
Taken straight to the lead by Danny Peisley West Germany controlled the tempo to a nicety before Peisley snuck away near the 200m and the gelding held his advantage to the line.
The win was the first for West Germany in three starts since joining the Sheppard stable almost two years ago after being purchased online showing that in the racing game patience is most certainly a virtue.
Speaking of patience the connections of the next Grafton winner in Romi have had to call on all of their patience as they waited for the wayward mare to finally ring up number one.
Romi has always had a trick or three throughout her career and you never quite know which Romi will show up on race day. She has the speed to lead almost any maiden but then from time to time can be tardy away and put pay to her chances.
Last week in the Maiden 1000m she blew the start and was a clear last away then was inclined to over race mid race and then deal with the leader running to the outside fence leaving her with little option but to follow.
In the end the Dwayne Schmidt trained Romi under Matt McGuren overcame all of the difficulties to get up in the final bound in a finish that tricked many.
The connections of the final Grafton winner for the day could be forgiven that winners wise they had been out in the cold for a significant period of time with their last winner being over two years ago.
However Hypothermia brought the wait in the gold to an end when she scored a solid win in the Maiden 1410m. Purchased online form the Godolphin organisation Hypothermia has now had four starts for the new yard being placed first up and finishing close up at her next two starts before the win.
Ridden by Kirk Matheson Hypothermia settled well back but had moved to be stalking the leaders making the home turn. Once in the straight Hypothermia was coming quickly but the leader gave a massive kick at the 200m putting the issue in some doubt.
However over the final 100m Hypothermia found plenty under riding to in the end win with some authority and provide leading Grafton trainer John Shelton with a winner at the last three Grafton meetings.
