Grafton trainers had a big day on Friday at the local meeting with three stables all recording winners.
John Shelton was first in the winners circle when Awesome Spirit was successful in the Maiden 1100m.
Ridden by Ben Looker Awesome Spirit scored a solid win, after jumping to the front Looker took the drag to trail for a short distance before then racing outside the leader mid race and kicking on the home turn and establish what turned out to be a winning break.
Raced by a similar syndicate to the one that raced Shelton’s former top flight galloper Belflyer Awesome Spirit was having his second start since joining the Shelton stable.
Dan Want was next to score when Wonderwhen led throughout to score a very easy victory in the Maiden 1400m.
Ridden by Jodi Worley Wonderwhen was allowed to set a solid tempo in front and when Worley then pushed the go button at the 300m it was race over with the 3yo filly never in any danger of defeat.
The final Grafton winner for the day was the Dwayne Schmidt prepared Alf’s Magic which made it two on the bounce in the Class 1 1200m.
Ridden by Ben Looker Alf’s Magic was not beset away but quickly booted through on the rail to take control of the race by the 900m mark.
Like Wonderwhen earlier when Looker released the breaks on the home turn Alf’s Magic sprinted very quickly to establish a winning break and win with plenty in reserve.
With the NRRA country championships just around the corner it is now time for trainers to sit down work through the upcoming programmes and see which of their yard should be aiming at the big prize.
There is no doubt it will be on the horizon for Alf’s Magic and I would not be surprised if the connections of Wonderwhen have dared to now wonder if.
