With Grafton’s biggest non July race meeting on today it is time to review the last Grafton meeting and as is so often the case Grafton based trainers again shared in the spoils.
It was the two biggest stables in the town to win races. First celebrating was the Dwayne Schmidt yard when former Victorian galloper NULLABORN scored a strong win in the Maiden 1106m.
NULLABORN ridden by Luke Rolls the mare had to overcome the outside gate but Rolls jumped a good half length clear went handlebars down and seemed to cross to the fence in a flash.
Once in the lead Rolls steadied the ship to control the tempo making it hard for any from the back to get into the race. In the straight NULLABORN kicked strongly to hold off the chasers which had raced with her throughout.
The next local winner went to team Shelton when JULE’S SPIRIT having its first start for the stable scored a very impressive victory in the Class2 1006m.
Like the earlier winner JULE’S SPIRIT was ridden by Luke Rolls but came from well back in the field to blow the opposition of the park.
After settling worse than midfield JULE’S SPIRIT worked to the outside of the field as heads were turned for home and came with a well time run to round up the leaders with a hundred to run and win eased down.
For those heading racing today both the Dwayne Schmidt and John Shelton stables are represented by three runners.
